The golden ratio

Universal source of inspiration, blown by nature

The golden ratio is the cornerstone of the Phi 1.618 house.

Naturally present in nature and used by man for centuries, this "divine proportion" is the key to an aesthetic that is both harmonious and timeless.

This number is our source of inspiration for the creation of each of our fine leather goods. That is why we have chosen to name our house after it.

This proportion is represented by the Greek letter φ (pronounced "Phi") and its rounded value is 1.618.

"The nobility of a thing is its eternity.

The origin of the golden ratio

The golden ratio has been identified since antiquity as a specific proportion between two dimensions, at the origin of a universal form of beauty present in nature. It has, for example, been found in the spiral structure of nautilus shells or in the positioning of sunflower seeds.

It was thus possible to determine golden rectangles, for which the ratio between the small side and the large side is equal to the golden ratio. Similarly, there are golden triangles, isosceles, characterized by this same ratio between their sides.

Φ as a representation of the golden ratio

Considered the most pleasing ratio to the eye, the golden ratio has been used in many works of art over the centuries.

The Greek sculptor Phidias was inspired by it in the 5th century BC, when he created the Parthenon in Athens.

It is in homage to Phidias that the golden number is represented by the letter φ .

A "divine proportion" that inspired the greatest

It was used for the construction of Gothic cathedrals as well as for many great works such as the Birth of Venus by Botticelli or more recently, the Cité Radieuse by Corbusier near Marseille.

Leonardo da Vinci made a scientific study of it while applying it to his works, including the Mona Lisa and the Vitruvian Man. He was convinced that by using the proportions of the golden ratio in a creation, it would be more harmonious.

The golden number at the heart of Phi 1.618

Fascinated by the singularity of the golden ratio and its timeless/eternal character, Juliette Angeletti, chose to be inspired by it to create the haute maroquinerie Phi 1.618.

She found in this "divine proportion", the means to realize her ambition: a truly durable leather goods as much by its timeless and universal aesthetics as by the quality of its manufacture.
