Who has the best "biobased" score?
The trend is to look for materials that seem more ecological and ethical than leather. Vegan alternatives have emerged, such as materials made from cactus, apple, grape or pineapple to also meet a consumer demand.
Are these new materials more ecological? What are their "biosourced" scores, i.e. the rate of renewable raw materials?
Tests conducted by the Technical Council of Leather (CTC) prove that leather has the best "biosourced" score, with a content ranging from 76% to 86% because the vast majority of leather is composed of animal skin, which is a by-product of the food industry.
In comparison, alternative materials made from apples, grapes or pineapples such as Desserto, Appleskin, Vegea or Pinatex have a score of only 16% to 65%. These materials are produced from food or agricultural waste, but the product that binds the waste is often derived from the petrochemical industry.
Despite a lower score than leather, these alternatives are still more environmentally friendly than petroleum-based synthetics.
The development of new materials is positive for the choice they offer to consumers, it just needs to be fully transparent so that consumers can make informed decisions.
